Driving up to the intersection of 46th and Grand Ave., you can already feel the small town bustle that is concentrated around the corner where Patisserie 46 is situated. When you walk into Patisserie 46 you are bound to face a good sized line of enthusiastic repeat customers eagerly anticipating a new creation from their renowned baker, John Kraus. This cozy spot is well deserving of it's reputation, and really does live up to the hype. It boasts the best Eclairs, which we admittedly have yet to try, but our generous sampling of several other delectable treats have us wholeheartedly agreeing with the praise this little patisserie has received from the critics.
My husband Kim avoids coconut containing foods almost as if he has an allergy. However, when I convinced him to taste the coco "O" pictured below...well, let's just say we had to fight over the rest of the pastry! If you have ever enjoyed a fresh baby coconut, you will know that after drinking the coconut water, there is a thin lining of coconut meat inside the shell that is extremely smooth, soft, and delicate, such that it almost melts in your mouth. This pastry was like that experience... in dessert form! Hmm...I think that last bit was more sexual than sensual, but I'm gonna keep it because it's too good of a description!
We picked up two pastries packed in a cute box labeled Patisserie 46. One was called 'Rory' - a caramel mouse, vanilla cream, sable breton, salted caramel with pecan nougatine, and the other was called 'Golden Berry' - a lemon mouse, poached berry gelee, lemon financier and sable breton. I picked the Rory because I'll eat anything salted caramel, but this one...this one blew my mind! We both got to try each others' dessert and I must say that although I have never been fond of lemon flavoring, the Golden Berry was equally amazing. They both had just the right amount of sweetness, with subtle and balanced flavors, thoughtfully crafted and beautifully presented.
Patisserie 46 has become our go-to spot for the weekends since our very first visit. Their outdoor patio is the perfect place to relax on a sunny Saturday morning while chatting with your main squeeze, enjoying coffee and pastries, and day-dreaming about the future. How wonderful it would be to live in this neighborhood and frequent this little pastry shop on your morning walk...😍
Hope you enjoyed this blog post and found that it encouraged you to give Patisserie 46 a try...not that they need any help 😋
